Acupuncture for Hormones

A Natural Path to Hormonal Balance

Hormonal imbalances can affect women at any stage of life—from the teenage years through menopause—impacting everything from mood and energy levels to menstrual cycles, fertility, and sleep. While symptoms like irregular periods, PMS, fatigue, hot flashes, or mood swings are common, they don’t have to be something you simply “live with.”

Hormone imbalances can occur for various reasons. Ongoing stress increases cortisol levels, disrupting the regular communication between the hypothalamus, pituitary, and ovaries.

Lifestyle behaviours, such as an unhelpful diet, too little rest, or limited exercise, further strain the system. Major life phases, from puberty and regular cycles to perimenopause and menopause, can tip hormones off balance, leading to irregular periods, shifting moods, and fatigue.

Hormones are also laborious because they’re non-linear and ever fluctuating; many components can increase or decrease hormone levels on a moment-to-moment basis.

Acupuncture and  herbs may be a perfect option for someone who has tried conventional medicine to no avail, or for someone who is seeking a practitioner concerned with finding the root of the problem.

Acupuncture offers a gentle, effective way to support hormonal health and restore balance in the body.

How Acupuncture Helps Regulate Hormones

When hormones are in harmony, the body functions optimally. Think pain-free periods, steady energy throughout the day, and a smooth experience of perimenopause.

Acupuncture works by stimulating specific points on the body to regulate the nervous system and improve circulation, influencing the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis—a critical communication network for hormone production of which play a key role in hormonal function.

By stimulating the acupoints related to hormonal balance, acupuncture can help regulate the production and release of hormones, including cortisol, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and thyroid hormones.

Acupuncture helps your body find a more natural state of balance, regulate energy levels, smooth emotions and help manage sleep and menstrual problems.

Addressing Root Causes, Not Just Symptoms

Unlike treatments that only mask hormonal symptoms, acupuncture aims to address underlying causes.

Chronic stress, poor sleep, and inflammation can all disrupt hormonal rhythms. Acupuncture works holistically to calm the nervous system, support adrenal function, and promote better rest—helping your body return to a healthier hormonal rhythm.

By promoting balance in this system, acupuncture can:

  • Regulate menstrual cycles

  • Reduce PMS and PMDD symptoms

  • Support ovulation and fertility

  • Ease menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats

  • Improve sleep, mood, and energy

  • Lower stress and cortisol levels

Specific Conditions We Support

  • Menstrual Irregularities: Fluctuations in hormones can cause irregular cycles, heavy bleeding, or painful periods (dysmenorrhea). Acupuncture may help regulate menstrual cycles, reduce cramps, and alleviate symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) by balancing estrogen and progesterone levels.

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): PCOS is characterized by hormonal imbalances that disrupt ovulation and can cause weight gain, acne, and irregular periods. Acupuncture has been shown to support ovulatory function and help manage symptoms.

“I came to acupuncture after being diagnosed with PCOS and not having a period for over six months. Within a few treatments, my cycle returned—and stayed consistent for the first time in years.”
— Jenna M., 29

  • Menopause and Perimenopause: The transition to menopause often brings hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and sleep disturbances. Acupuncture can ease these symptoms by promoting hormonal harmony and reducing stress.

“After struggling with night sweats and poor sleep during perimenopause, acupuncture was a game changer. I finally feel like myself again.”
— Susan D., 51

  • Thyroid Disorders: Conditions such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism affect hormone production and metabolism. Acupuncture may support thyroid function and help stabilize hormone levels.

  • Infertility: Hormonal imbalances are a common cause of infertility. Acupuncture is frequently used alongside fertility treatments to enhance reproductive health, improve ovarian function, and increase blood flow to the uterus.

  • Stress-Related Imbalances: Chronic stress elevates cortisol, which can disrupt other hormones and lead to symptoms like fatigue, weight changes, and mood swings. Acupuncture helps reduce stress and restore hormonal equilibrium

“Hormonal balance is about more than just estrogen or progesterone—it’s about how all the systems in the body communicate and function together. Acupuncture looks at the whole picture. We don’t just treat symptoms; we help the body return to balance from the inside out.”
— Dr. Tamera Firnbach, D.C, L.Ac

A Complementary Approach to Care

Acupuncture pairs well with conventional treatments and lifestyle changes. Whether you're working with an OB-GYN, reproductive endocrinologist, or managing symptoms on your own, acupuncture can enhance your care plan with minimal side effects and lasting benefits.

Consistent acupuncture sessions, combined with regular self-care, establish a solid foundation for maintaining steady hormone balance. Each visit helps the body fine-tune natural hormone production and keep things on track.

Acupuncture yields stronger results when combined with supportive lifestyle habits. Organizing balanced meals, engaging in moderate exercise, and finding effective ways to manage everyday stress all help your hormones function smoothly.

Bringing these approaches together encourages a healthier hormonal rhythm and boosts your overall sense of wellbeing. It’s a coordinated effort between acupuncture and daily routines that strengthens your body’s ability to manage shifts in hormone levels over time.

Acupuncture FAQ's:

Does acupuncture hurt? We hear this question in clinic very often! One of the big misconceptions about acupuncture, is that because there are needles involved, it must hurt. However, acupuncture is practically painless! The needles we use are hair-thin – and first time patients will often express their surprise when they realize how different acupuncture feels to what they expected. The sensations a patient can experience with the needles may be numbness, tingling, distension, heaviness, warmth, or a radiating feeling. All of these sensations are considered desirable sensations in terms of the treatment – often they show us that we’ve achieved the response we want from the body. Any sensations tend to dissipate within a few seconds, leaving the patient in a very calm state – so much so they often fall asleep! Most people who come in, even those who are scared of needles, find that acupuncture is a comfortable, relaxing, and enjoyable experience.

How many acupuncture sessions will I require? This can be a difficult question to answer, as there is no “one size fits all” in acupuncture. With each patient, I will come up with a unique, individual, and holistic treatment plan based on your symptoms and health history. For a loose guideline based on my own clinical experience, patients with acute conditions (something severe and sudden in onset) may only require 3-6 treatments to heal, whereas chronic conditions (long-developing symptoms) may take longer. I tend to find that many patients find that acupuncture benefits them in someway almost immediately, and many feel things such as reduction in pain, stress-relief, increased energy, and better sleep after only a few treatments! It is important to note that every person is different, and acupuncture is such a great medicine as it takes this into consideration.

Is acupuncture safe? Yes. Because acupuncture treatment is drug-free, you avoid the risk of drugs which can cause side-effects or dependency. During each acupuncture session your doctor will adjust the treatment according to your progress, so you receive constant monitoring of any changes.

How Long Are Visits? Total Visit time is one hour. Acupuncture Treatments are usually 40 mins. acupuncture treatment is drug-free, you avoid the risk of drugs which can cause side-effects or dependency. During each acupuncture session your doctor will adjust the treatment according to your progress, so you receive constant monitoring of any changes.

What can I expect from acupuncture? Most people are surprised at the depth of relaxation, the intensity of energy which occurs, and sense of well-being and healing which occurs from the rebalancing of energy. Relief from symptoms may be felt immediately or gradually in the following days (or weeks) depending on the severity of symptoms and how long you’ve had it. You will find you will look forward to treatment for the many benefits that are received from acupuncture. Many who have lived with their condition for so many years believe they will just have to make do. Others live with pain thinking that “someday” it will go away. Acupuncture has succeeded in many cases where other treatments have not. We have seen people achieve complete relief of decades old problems after just a few visits.
