Frequency Specific Microcurrent

Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM)

Frequency-specific microcurrent (FSM) is a technique for treating pain by using low-level electrical current. The current is delivered to certain parts of the body in an attempt to relieve the pain.

In using FSM to treat pain, it’s been found that various frequencies can be used to potentially reduce inflammation (swelling), repair tissue, and reduce pain.

What does that mean to you?

  • Decreased pain

  • Increased rate of healing

  • Increased range of motion

  • Decreased swelling

  • More energy

What is Microcurrent?

Micro amperage current is the same kind of current your body produces on its own within each cell. It is very small; there is not enough current to stimulate sensory nerves so the current flow cannot be felt.

How can frequencies help?

In her work, Dr. McMakin demonstrated that Microcurrent can increase ATP production by 500%. ATP is manufactured in our cells by our mitochondria and serves as energy stored inside cells that govern all reactions requiring energy.

FSM has been shown to increase endorphins, pain relieving chemicals produced by the body, and decreases prostaglandins, inflammatory substances that are usually elevated in chronic pain conditions.

What conditions does FSM treat?

The wide variety of frequencies offered by FSM makes it a versatile tool able to help a variety of clinical conditions. FSM is especially good at treating nerve and muscle pain, inflammation and scar tissue. It works well for lower back pain, upper back pain and neck pain due to all causes, sports injuries, bursitis, arthritis, tendinitis and even fibromyalgia.

Some other clinical problems where FSM is helpful:

  • Allergies, Sinus problems

  • Asthma, Bronchitis, COPD

  • Achilles tendonitis

  • Adhesions

  • Asthma

  • Back pain

  • Carpal Tunnel syndrome

  • Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)

  • Colitis, Irritable Bowel

  • Concussion

  • Endometriosis, Fibroids, Pelvic Pain

  • Fibromyalgia associated with cervical spine injury

  • Fractures

  • Frozen shoulder

  • Kidney stone pain

  • Lymphedema

  • Migraine headaches

  • Myofascial pain

How does FSM fit in my Care Plan and Treatments?

Through examining your medical history, lab work, physical assessment, Autonomic Response Testing, and Functional Medicine testing, Dr. Firnbach will isolate certain organs and tissues within the body that are not properly functioning. This takes a more Holistic View of your symptoms. Alternative Health takes in to account the whole body and how it's systems work together.

Through the testing process, certain issues such as microrobes will make themselves known, whereby FSM can be utilized to target affected areas and the microbes to give the body a stronger chance to overcome these disturbances. For example, if parasites are suspected to be within the bile ducts, the FSM machine can use frequencies known to disrupt this organism, paired with the frequency specific to the bile ducts to carry these frequency to the desired location. This allows Dr. Firnbach to target certain areas of the body where the problem resides. This helps to shorten overall recovery time.

How FSM is done?

The microcurrent can be applied via damp towels placed over the affected area, or pads applied to skin.

How many treatments do I need?

It depends how fast you respond. Dr. Firnbach will review this with you at the time of treatment.

How long do the benefits last?

Every patient responds individually but the changes to the muscle seem to be long lasting. About 60-80% of the changes created in one treatment last until the next treatment, about 4-7 days. Your muscles are often used to being the way they are and may return to the old configuration if not treated again. Although patients have had permanent changes in one treatment, the average number of treatments depends on the complexity of the problem.

***Treatments also need to be supported by appropriate lifestyle changes. (Ex: if the problem is chronic trigger points due to poor posture, FSM will help treat the trigger points. However, if the postural issues are not addressed the problem will likely recur.)

Is It Safe?

Dr. McMakin has been using FSM since 1994 and various practitioners have been using FSM since 1997. There have been no permanent adverse effects attributable to the use of the microcurrent units or to the use of the frequencies.

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Peripheral neuropathy

  • Post-herpetic Neuralgia

  • Post-surgical pain

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Reflexive Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD)

  • Scar tissue

  • Sciatica

  • Shingles

  • Spinal Disc Pain

  • Sports injuries

  • Sprains/strains

  • Temperomandibular Joint (TMJ) Pain

  • Tendon and ligament injury or pain

  • Tension headaches

  • Tennis elbow

  • Whiplash

Frequency Specific Microcurrent(FSM) has also been shown to dramatically reduce inflammation within minutes so we recommend it for anyone that has had an injury such as: sprain, strain, road rash, post-surgical recovery, post workout DOMS recovery and more. Of course, if you want to stay away from medications to treat your pain, FSM may be non-drug the solution for you.
