Acupuncture for Allergies

Can Acupuncture Help with Allergies?

If you’re among the millions affected by seasonal or chronic allergies, acupuncture may provide the relief you've been searching for.

By stimulating key points throughout the body, acupuncture helps restore balance and supports your body’s natural healing processes. This can ease symptoms like sneezing, congestion, and itchy eyes—often with long-lasting effects.

Unlike conventional allergy treatments that rely on medications, acupuncture offers a gentle, drug-free approach. It’s a holistic way to manage allergies, helping you breathe easier and feel better—naturally.

Whether you're dealing with:

  • Seasonal allergies like pollen, grass, or ragweed

  • Environmental triggers such as dust mites, mold, or pet dander

  • Food sensitivities that cause digestive discomfort or skin reactions

  • Skin allergies including eczema or hives

  • …acupuncture offers a gentle, drug-free alternative that treats the root causes, not just the symptoms. Over time, many patients experience fewer flare-ups and greater resilience during allergy season.

Experience how this holistic approach can help you breathe easier and feel better—naturally.

How Acupuncture Works for Allergies

Allergies can make life miserable—constant sneezing, itchy eyes, sinus pressure, and fatigue can leave you feeling drained. Whether triggered by pollen, pet dander, food sensitivities, or dust mites, allergic reactions are essentially your immune system overreacting to harmless substances.

That’s where acupuncture comes in. This ancient, holistic treatment doesn’t just mask symptoms—it helps regulate your immune response and reduce the severity of allergic reactions over time.

The Root of the Problem: Immune Imbalance

At its core, an allergy is a sign of imbalance in the immune system. When your body encounters allergens, it releases histamines, which cause inflammation and trigger symptoms like congestion, coughing, rashes, and digestive upset.

Acupuncture helps by addressing this imbalance. It stimulates specific points on the body—known as acupoints—to calm an overactive immune system and support overall harmony in the body.

How Acupuncture Alleviates Allergy Symptoms

Acupuncture works on several levels to relieve allergies:

  • Reduces Inflammation: Needling certain points helps lower inflammatory markers in the body, easing swelling in the sinuses and airways.

  • Regulates Immune Function: Acupuncture can modulate the immune system, preventing it from overreacting to allergens.

  • Opens Sinuses and Clears Congestion: Specific points help drain nasal passages and improve airflow, offering fast relief from stuffiness.

  • Eases Stress and Boosts Resilience: Chronic stress can worsen allergic reactions. Acupuncture activates the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing cortisol levels.

  • Strengthens the Body’s Defenses: Regular treatments can enhance your body’s ability to respond calmly and appropriately to environmental triggers.

What Kinds of Allergies Can Acupuncture Help?

Acupuncture has been shown to be effective for a wide range of allergic conditions, including:

  • Seasonal Allergies (Hay Fever): Relief from pollen, grass, and ragweed-related symptoms

  • Environmental Allergies: Support for sensitivities to mold, dust mites, pet dander, and more

  • Food Allergies and Sensitivities: While not a cure, acupuncture can help reduce inflammation and support digestive health

  • Skin Allergies: Such as eczema, hives, and allergic dermatitis

  • Sinus Allergies: Reducing pressure, pain, and recurring sinus infections

What to Expect During Treatment

Your acupuncturist will begin with a thorough consultation to understand your symptoms, triggers, and overall health. Treatment plans are personalized, targeting both the symptoms and the underlying causes of your allergies.

Thin, sterile needles are inserted into carefully selected points on the body. Most people find the experience relaxing—many even fall asleep during the session. Over time, consistent treatments can lead to long-term relief and fewer flare-ups.

A Natural, Drug-Free Approach

Unlike conventional treatments like antihistamines or steroid sprays, acupuncture doesn’t suppress symptoms—it works to bring the whole body into balance. Many people choose acupuncture because it’s:

  • Gentle

  • Non-invasive

  • Free from side effects

  • Supportive of overall wellness

Acupuncture FAQ's:

Does acupuncture hurt? We hear this question in clinic very often! One of the big misconceptions about acupuncture, is that because there are needles involved, it must hurt. However, acupuncture is practically painless! The needles we use are hair-thin – and first time patients will often express their surprise when they realize how different acupuncture feels to what they expected. The sensations a patient can experience with the needles may be numbness, tingling, distension, heaviness, warmth, or a radiating feeling. All of these sensations are considered desirable sensations in terms of the treatment – often they show us that we’ve achieved the response we want from the body. Any sensations tend to dissipate within a few seconds, leaving the patient in a very calm state – so much so they often fall asleep! Most people who come in, even those who are scared of needles, find that acupuncture is a comfortable, relaxing, and enjoyable experience.

How many acupuncture sessions will I require? This can be a difficult question to answer, as there is no “one size fits all” in acupuncture. With each patient, I will come up with a unique, individual, and holistic treatment plan based on your symptoms and health history. For a loose guideline based on my own clinical experience, patients with acute conditions (something severe and sudden in onset) may only require 3-6 treatments to heal, whereas chronic conditions (long-developing symptoms) may take longer. I tend to find that many patients find that acupuncture benefits them in someway almost immediately, and many feel things such as reduction in pain, stress-relief, increased energy, and better sleep after only a few treatments! It is important to note that every person is different, and acupuncture is such a great medicine as it takes this into consideration.

Is acupuncture safe? Yes. Because acupuncture treatment is drug-free, you avoid the risk of drugs which can cause side-effects or dependency. During each acupuncture session your doctor will adjust the treatment according to your progress, so you receive constant monitoring of any changes.

How Long Are Visits? Total Visit time is one hour. Acupuncture Treatments are usually 40 mins. acupuncture treatment is drug-free, you avoid the risk of drugs which can cause side-effects or dependency. During each acupuncture session your doctor will adjust the treatment according to your progress, so you receive constant monitoring of any changes.

What can I expect from acupuncture? Most people are surprised at the depth of relaxation, the intensity of energy which occurs, and sense of well-being and healing which occurs from the rebalancing of energy. Relief from symptoms may be felt immediately or gradually in the following days (or weeks) depending on the severity of symptoms and how long you’ve had it. You will find you will look forward to treatment for the many benefits that are received from acupuncture. Many who have lived with their condition for so many years believe they will just have to make do. Others live with pain thinking that “someday” it will go away. Acupuncture has succeeded in many cases where other treatments have not. We have seen people achieve complete relief of decades old problems after just a few visits.
