Chiropractic & Understanding Subluxation

"Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases."

- Hippocrates

Doctors of Chiropractic have a deep respect for the human body's ability to heal itself and manage pain without the use of surgery or medication. Chiropractic is not an alternative to medicine, nor is it complementary to medicine. It is a separate and distinct science, art, and philosophy of health and healing, and it has become the most prevalent natural healing art in the world. A Doctor of Chiropractic is one who is involved in the treatment and prevention of disease, as well as the promotion of public health, and a wellness approach to patient healthcare.

Since Chiropractic is based on the premise that the body is a self-healing organism, and that the nervous system is the master control system of the body, Chiropractic care is all about the health of your spine. Minor displacements of the spinal bones, known as vertebral subluxations, can cause stress to the spinal cord, which acts as the main line of intelligence for the entire body. These displacements, or subluxations, are the cause of many unwanted health conditions. Chiropractors take a more holistic approach to the body. Chiropractic is the largest alternative health profession in North America and the third largest health-care profession in the United States.

How Can Chiropractic Help?

A Vertebral Subluxation is best described as a breakdown in the communication between your brain and your body. Subluxations can occur when any form of stress, be it physical, chemical, or emotional, causes one or more of the spinal vertebra to become misaligned enough to cause spinal nerve pressure.

Your brain communicates with your body by sending and receiving messages along the spinal column. These messages are carried through your spinal cord and delivered to your body through the spinal nerves. When this communication is interrupted, it is referred to as vertebral subluxation. This can affect your overall health.

Your spinal nerves also innervate your organs.  When you have a subluxation it  effects organ function and will cause "symptoms" to let  you know there is a problem.

On the chart to the right, are some of the common symptoms associated with the corresponding nerve and vertebrae. For example, if there is a subluxation at L1 you may experience constipation, diarrhea, or colitis. If C1 is affected by a subluxation, you may experience, headaches, insomnia, head cold, and dizziness.

WHAT KIND OF TRAINING DOES A CHIROPRACTOR HAVE?

Chiropractic doctors go through a minimum of four years of schooling at a chiropractic college, generally preceded by an undergraduate degree in the basic sciences or several years of experience in a prior relevant health care field. We must pass four national boards to practice chiropractic.

Students of chiropractic care must spend a minimum of at least 4,200 hours with their teacher, and a minimum of 1,000 hours of fully supervised clinical training with an instructor as they learn the appropriate diagnosis and treatment techniques to help heal your body and restore it to its natural, fully functioning state.

Chiropractors are required to attend a minimum of 20 hours per year of continuing education to keep up with the latest techniques, research and medical devices to keep us on the cutting edge of medicine.
