When Did I Stop Feeling Like Myself? Finding Your Way Through Menopause

It starts in your chest and rises to your face in seconds. You're in the middle of a meeting, or a dinner out, or a conversation with a friend, and suddenly you're peeling off a layer and fanning yourself with whatever's nearby. Later that night, you wake up soaked and kick the covers off, then pull them back on, shivering. You thought once your periods stopped, things would finally settle down.

For many women, menopause brings relief from monthly cycles and a whole new set of questions: about sleep, energy, joints, skin, mood, and what this next chapter is supposed to feel like.

"When did I stop feeling like myself?" It's the question I hear more than any other from women in this season. If you've asked it too, you're far from alone, and there are real answers.

Here's what I want you to know: menopause isn't an ending, and feeling run-down isn't the price of admission. With the right support, this can be one of the strongest seasons of your life.

A milestone, not a finish line

Menopause is officially one moment in time: 12 months without a period. Everything after that is postmenopause, and for most women, it's a long chapter. With menopause arriving around age 51 on average, many women will spend roughly a third of their lives on the other side of it.

That's why menopause care isn't only about getting through hot flashes. It's about building the foundation for the decades ahead: strong bones, a healthy heart, a clear mind, restful sleep, and the energy to enjoy it all.

What lower estrogen touches

Estrogen does far more than run your cycle. As it settles at a new, lower level, nearly every system notices:

  • Temperature: hot flashes and night sweats, which often last several years and, for some women, much longer.

  • Sleep: lighter sleep and middle-of-the-night waking, even without night sweats.

  • Bones: bone loss speeds up in the first years after menopause, which is why strength now matters so much.

  • Heart and metabolism: changes in cholesterol, blood sugar, and where your body stores weight, often shifting to the middle.

  • Brain and mood: brain fog, forgetfulness, low mood, or feeling less resilient to stress.

  • Joints and muscles: new aches, stiffness, and a harder time holding on to muscle.

  • Skin and hair: dryness, thinning, and a noticeable drop in collagen in the first several years.

Symptoms are signals. They point to the systems that need extra care during this season of life.

Your body is always communicating. In menopause, it's asking for a new kind of support, not more pushing through.

The Eastern view: your second spring

Eastern tradition has a beautiful name for menopause: the second spring. The energy and nourishment that once went into monthly cycles and fertility are thought to return to you, available for your own health, wisdom, and vitality.

In that view, the uncomfortable symptoms, like heat rising in hot flashes, restless nights, and dryness, are signs that the body hasn't fully settled into its new balance yet. Care focuses on cooling, nourishing, and grounding the whole system so that second spring can truly bloom.

How holistic care supports menopause

  • Acupuncture helps reduce hot flashes, improve sleep, and support clarity and calm.

  • Herbal support promotes healthy hormone metabolism and emotional well-being.

  • Functional testing identifies adrenal stress, thyroid imbalance, and inflammation.

  • FSM restores nervous system balance and eases joint or muscle pain.

  • Lifestyle guidance strengthens vitality and emotional clarity for the years ahead.

And if skin changes are on your mind, our aesthetics care, including facial rejuvenation acupuncture, can support your skin naturally right alongside everything else.

Every clue. Every angle. One plan built for you.

No two women experience menopause the same way, so no two plans look alike. We gather every clue — your story, your symptoms, your sleep, your energy, what your body shows us, and what testing reveals — and look at them through Eastern tradition, functional medicine, and how your nervous system and structure are working. Three women past menopause can need very different things:

  • For one, the clues point to rising heat. Hot flashes that hit after a glass of wine, a spicy meal, or a stressful call. Calming her triggers and cooling the system become the heart of her plan.

  • For another, the clues point to joints and muscle. Stiff hips in the morning, aching hands, and losing strength she used to take for granted. Her structure, inflammation, and movement all need support.

  • For a third, the clues point to a stress rhythm that never shuts off. Wide awake at 2 a.m. with a racing mind, and foggy by afternoon. Her nervous system and stress hormones need to find a new rhythm.

Same season of life. Three different plans. That's what looking from every angle makes possible.

Everyday support for your second spring

For hot flashes:

  • Keep your bedroom cool and wear light layers to bed.

  • Notice your triggers. Alcohol, caffeine, spicy food, and stress often make hot flashes stronger.

  • When a hot flash starts, slow your breathing, with a longer exhale than inhale, and let it pass.

For the years ahead:

  • Prioritize strength training to support muscles, joints, and bones.

  • Build each meal around protein to help hold on to muscle.

  • Protect your sleep with a steady bedtime and a cool, dark room.

  • Make time for calm and connection. They matter as much as anything on this list.

What to expect at your first visit

We start by listening. We'll talk through your symptoms, your sleep, your energy, and what matters most to you in this next chapter.

We look deeper when it helps. When it's useful, we'll recommend testing to get a clearer picture of your hormones, thyroid, stress, and inflammation.

Then we build your plan together. We'll create a personalized plan for how you feel now and how you want to feel in the years ahead, and adjust it as your body responds.

Menopause questions we hear often

My periods stopped years ago, but I still have hot flashes. Is that normal?

Yes. Hot flashes often continue for several years after menopause, and for some women much longer. It's never too late to get support for them.

I'm looking for a natural approach. Can acupuncture really help with hot flashes?

Many women come to us for exactly that. Acupuncture, herbs, and lifestyle support can help ease hot flashes and night sweats, and the better sleep that follows often improves everything else.

Is it too late to start if I'm years past menopause?

Not at all. Whether you're one year or fifteen years past menopause, supporting your sleep, joints, energy, and long-term strength makes a difference.

Can you help with the changes in my skin?

Yes. Through our aesthetics care, including facial rejuvenation acupuncture, we can support your skin naturally as part of your overall plan.
